“What the fuck am I doing? What the fuck am I doing?” I asked myself that question a dozen times as I sat on the toilet, half dazed, cleaning the gash the tire iron had left on the top of my head. My hair was matted red, and my hands were shaking so much that it was hard to press a towel against the wound. I managed to stop the bleeding and wrap my head in a fresh towel. I used soap and water to wipe my blood from the floor and washbasin. There was so much of it, it left a pink stain on the opaque tiles and marble basin, and its metallic smell was turning my already sick stomach.

My body ached, so I ran the shower and stood under it, making sure not to wet my wrapped head or face. I cleaned my cut legs and tried my best to wash the blood away, wash away the whole night, try and forget it ever happened, but it was impossible.

My nervous system was working overtime and had kicked off a comedown I hadn’t experienced in years. A wave of paranoia hit me, and all of a sudden it was hard to breathe as I imagined a group of masked men storming my motel room, beating Red to death and nailing me to the floor and setting me on fire. I kicked and screamed as the flames licked over me, melting my skin and hair.

I killed the shower and toweled off. I climbed into bed and pulled the sheets over my head. I felt safe under there. I never wanted to come out.
